The English Admiral Horatio, viscount Nelson (1758-1805), lost the sight of his right eye during the invasion of corscia (1793). In 2 april 1801 an English fleet under Admiral Sir Hyde Parker attacked the Danish fleet at Copenhagen; early in the day Nelson, a vice-admiral in the fleet, was ordered to withdraw. Robert Southey, in his Life of Nelson (London, 1813), chapter 7, records the story of Nelson's refusal: "Nelson said, 'I have only one eye - I have a right to be blind sometimes': - and then, putting the glass to his blind eye, he exclaimed, 'I really do not see the signal!'". Nelsons insubordination led to a brilliant naval victory.
